For small teams, there are a few kinds of Zendesk alternatives. Freshdesk and Zoho Desk offer similar ticketing, but cheaper. Help Scout and Zoho Desk have free plans that'll actually work for a real team. Gorgias is designed for ecommerce shops. Intercom and Helpo AI put an AI agent up front, so customers get most of their answers without waiting for a person. Here are 9 alternatives, their price tags and their gotchas. All prices come from each vendor's own pricing page as of 24 October 2026.
Why teams look for a Zendesk alternative
Zendesk is a great product. It's also made and priced for support teams that keep growing, and a small team feels that on both counts.
The entry plan, Support Team, is $19 per agent a month on annual billing. That gets you email ticketing, routing, saved replies and automations. For messaging and live chat, AI agents and the knowledge base, you need the next tier up, Suite Team, at $55 per agent a month on annual billing. Suite Professional is $115. So if you're a team of 5 and want chat and AI agents on Suite Team, that's $3,300 a year before add-ons.
The other reason is setup. You can configure Zendesk to do practically anything, so someone has to set up the triggers, views, macros and groups before it works the way you want. Teams with a support operations person like that. Teams where the founder answers tickets in between other things usually don't.
What to check before you switch
- Where your customers write from. Email, website chat, social or phone. Pick a tool that is strong on the channel you get most messages on.
- How AI is billed. Included in the plan, per resolution, per outcome or per session. The cheapest seat can turn into the biggest bill.
- How seats are priced. Per agent, capped per plan, or not priced by seat at all.
- Free plan or trial. And what happens to your account when the trial ends.
- Your help center. The articles you wrote for Zendesk are the most useful thing you'll bring with you, because any AI agent answers from them.
Nine Zendesk alternatives
There's one here for each kind of team, and the "Best for" line tells you which. All prices are from each vendor's public pricing page on 24 October 2026. Support software prices change often, so look at theirs before you buy.
Helpo AI
- Best for
- Small teams and online shops that want an AI agent answering website chat from their own docs, pages and product catalog, with a human one click away when it can't help.
- What you get
- Start free with 1 project, 100 AI questions a day and 2 team members, including the chat widget, a shared inbox with human takeover, tickets and lead capture. No credit card required. Paid plans are $19.99/mo and up, and seats are part of the plan, not charged per agent. New workspaces get 14 days of Pro.
- The catch
- Website chat is the main thing Helpo does, so there's no email, phone or social inbox yet. If most of your tickets come in by email, you'll still need a ticketing tool for them. And on the free plan, the AI stops for the day at 100 questions.
Freshdesk
- Best for
- Teams that want Zendesk-style ticketing with SLAs and routing, and the option of the wider Freshworks suite later.
- What you get
- $19 per agent a month for Growth on annual billing ($23 monthly), $55 for Pro and $89 for Enterprise. All plans come with the Freddy AI Agent and its first 500 sessions.
- The catch
- Once those 500 sessions are used, you pay $49 per 100 AI Agent sessions, and the Copilot assistant is $29 per agent a month on Pro and Enterprise. There's no free plan, at least according to the pricing page. You get a 14-day trial, and if you don't choose a paid plan, your account is suspended.
Zoho Desk
- Best for
- Teams on a tight budget that want a full ticketing system, especially if they already use other Zoho apps.
- What you get
- Free for 3 users with email ticketing. Paid plans are $7, $14, $23 and $40 per user a month, billed annually (Express, Standard, Professional and Enterprise).
- The catch
- The pieces that compete with Zendesk's Suite are on the higher tiers. The knowledge base and Answer bot start on Standard, and Zia AI is Professional. Live chat for any visitor (through Zoho SalesIQ) is Enterprise only; Standard has a chat widget, but only for logged-in customers. On the lower plans, some generative AI features need your own OpenAI key.
Help Scout
- Best for
- Teams whose support is mostly email and who want it to feel like a calm shared inbox, not a ticket queue.
- What you get
- Free for 5 users, with 1 inbox, 1 Docs site and 100 contacts a month. Paid plans are $25, $45 and $75 per user a month (annual), with live chat, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger starting on Standard.
- The catch
- Envoy, the AI that replies to customers, costs $0.75 per resolution plus seats, with a 3-month free trial. Standard lets you have up to 25 users, and Plus up to 50.
Intercom
- Best for
- Software and online businesses that want an AI agent doing most of the answering, inside a polished messenger and inbox.
- What you get
- Essential, Advanced and Expert cost $29, $85 and $132 a seat a month (annual billing). When we checked, new customers were getting Essential for $19. The Fin AI Agent is available on all plans.
- The catch
- Fin's $0.99 per outcome comes on top of seats, so your cost follows your volume. There's no charge when Fin can't respond, and you can set spending limits, but a busy month still costs more. No free plan: you get a 14-day free trial, no card required.
Gorgias
- Best for
- Shopify and other ecommerce brands that want a help desk built around their store, with pricing based on volume instead of headcount.
- What you get
- Pricing is per tickets a month, not per agent. The Starter helpdesk alone costs $10 a month for 50 tickets (monthly billing), and Basic is $50 a month for 300 tickets (annual billing). The AI Agent is available on any plan.
- The catch
- Volume pricing means a sale or a shipping delay can bump you up into the next tier. The AI Agent is an additional cost too: Basic plus AI Agent was $77 a month on annual billing. And since it's built for ecommerce, you won't get the full benefit if you don't sell online.
HubSpot Service Hub
- Best for
- Teams that already keep their customers in HubSpot and want tickets attached to the same contact record as sales and marketing.
- What you get
- Free for up to 2 users, no card required. Service Hub Professional is $90 a seat a month on annual billing (or $100 monthly).
- The catch
- The help desk workspace, knowledge base, customer portal and Customer Agent are Professional only, and Professional has a mandatory $1,500 one-time onboarding fee. Free live chat is branded as HubSpot until you pay for Starter.
Front
- Best for
- Teams that answer customer email together with sales or operations and want one shared inbox for all of it.
- What you get
- Starter is $25 per seat per month (annual billing) for up to 10 seats and 1 channel type. Professional is $65 per seat, for up to 50 seats and multiple channel types.
- The catch
- Front is a shared inbox first, and its AI is an add-on: Copilot is $20 per seat per month on Starter and Professional, and Autopilot is priced per conversation. There's a 14-day trial, but no free plan.
FreeScout (self-hosted)
- Best for
- Teams with someone who can run a PHP server and want a Zendesk-style shared inbox without a monthly bill.
- What you get
- The open-source core is free, with unlimited agents, mailboxes and tickets, on a server you run yourself.
- The catch
- You have to look after hosting, upgrades, backups and email sending. Add-ons like live chat and the AI integration are modules, and lots of modules are paid.

Which one fits your team
- Most of your support is email: Help Scout, or Front if sales and operations share the inbox.
- You want Zendesk-style ticketing for less: Freshdesk or Zoho Desk.
- You sell online: Gorgias, or Helpo AI if you mostly want product, shipping and returns questions answered in chat on your store.
- Your customer data lives in HubSpot: HubSpot Service Hub.
- You want AI to take most first replies: Intercom if paying per outcome suits you, Helpo AI if you'd rather pay one monthly plan with seats included.
- Your data has to stay on your own servers: FreeScout.

When Zendesk is still the right choice
Zendesk is worth it when you run multiple brands, need phone, chat, email and social in one place with complex routing and SLAs, or rely on its marketplace of 1,800+ apps and integrations. You can also get Zendesk free for up to 2 years if you're a qualified startup, which changes the game for a new company. If that sounds like you, a cheaper tool could leave you building a lot of workarounds.
How to switch without losing anything

- Export your tickets and contacts first, while you still have full admin access.
- Move your help center articles before anything else. They become the knowledge base in the new tool, and any AI agent answers from them. In Helpo, you can add your published help center as a website source and it answers from those pages, so nothing has to be retyped.
- Run both tools side by side for a week or two, with new conversations going to the new one.
- If your help center used your own domain, redirect the old article URLs so links in old emails and search results keep working.
- Cancel at the end of your billing term, not the start.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free Zendesk alternative?
If you're a small team, Zoho Desk (free for 3 users, with email ticketing) and Help Scout (free for 5 users, 1 inbox and 100 contacts a month) are the most complete free help desks. HubSpot's free tools cover 2 users. If you want AI answering in your website chat, Helpo AI's free plan includes 100 AI questions a day. And FreeScout is free if you host it yourself.
What is the cheapest Zendesk alternative?
The lowest seat price on a paid plan is Zoho Desk Express, at $7 per user a month on annual billing. But your lowest overall cost depends on volume: with tools that charge per AI resolution or per ticket, you pay more in a busy month. Price out the month you expect, not just the seat.
Is Freshdesk cheaper than Zendesk?
Not at the base level. Both start at $19 per agent a month billed yearly, and Freshdesk Pro is the same $55 as Zendesk Suite Team. The real difference is where the AI sits: Freshdesk includes its AI Agent on every plan with 500 sessions, while Zendesk's AI agents start on Suite Team.
Can I keep my Zendesk help center articles?
Yes. It's your content, so move it into the new tool's knowledge base before you cancel. You can also point Helpo AI at a published help center as a website source and it'll answer from those pages, so you don't have to type anything again.
